Wolves

Wolves are perhaps the strongest symbol of unspoiled wilderness and freedom in the animal world. We can look to the small communities that wolves now frequent and see the rapid decimation of our world's natural structure. Wolf teaches us the importance of living in unity and harmony with others and in realizing the importance of natural orders and structure. Despite false ideals, wolves do not tend to be overly aggressive unless attacked or cornered. They value their freedom and usually only prey on the old or infirm. They tend to try to avoid conflict by growling, or otherwise communicating their displeasure rather than simply responding violently. The wolf has much to teach us if we will only listen.

Below are a few qualities and lessons that the Wolf can teach us as taken from Ted Andrews Animal Speak

Keynotes: guardianship, ritual, loyalty, Spirit
Cycle of Power: year round, Full Moons, Twilight

The Wolf teaches us:

to realize the importance of a strong well-defined sense of family
to live by careful rules and rituals
to know ourselves and to develop strength and confidence in that knowledge so that we don't have to prove ourselves to all
how to convey our moods and meanings and to emphasize our speech to carry across our true feelings and intents
that true freedom requires discipline
respect and honor for family and children
to make use of what's available
not to waste
to keep our spirit alive
to trust our insights and to secure our attachments (emotional and structural) accordingly
to listen to our own inner thoughts and words

Those with wolf as a totem are usually very expressive in their body language like their brother the wolf. They usually have a strong intuition and should seek to listen carefully to their inner thoughts, as well as to develop a strong family structure around themselves. The wolf has a strong sense of smell which many relate to spiritual idealism. Those who find the wolf entering their life or as their totem should examine the qualities of the raven as well, as it is indicated that they have a unique relationship in nature. If the wolf visits you in a dream or is trying to send you a message it is most likely for you to step onto a new path, to breathe new life or change into your daily routines, to renew your spirit and to find stability and structure in your life. Follow the wolf's lessons and he will guard and teach you the nature of true freedom.
